  6. From MCI, take a flight to LAX on any carrier you prefer.

From LAX, take Malaysia Airlines (MH) flight from LAX to KUL to PEN.
You can purchase a ticket from LAX to PEN vice-versa, but you still have to transfer at KUL.
Return fares LAX-KUL-LAX: About USD 1,200 (including tax)
Return fares KUL-PEN-KUL: About MYR 200 @ USD 60 (including tax)

Transferring at KUL is very convenient as MH lands at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
Once you touch down at KUL, just proceed to the transfer counter to get the boarding pass for your flight to PEN.
You don’t have to claim/recheck-in your luggage as you are using the same airline.

Note that MH only flies from LAX to KUL 3 times a week – Sat, Mon & Wed.
So you have to either fly from LAX to KUL on Feb 6 or Feb 8 or Feb 10.

Say you choose to fly from LAX to KUL on Feb 8 23:10 :
    ETD LAX – Feb 8 23:10
ETA KUL – Feb 10 12:15 (+2 days due to time difference)

Upon reaching KUL on Feb 10, transfer to MH flight to PEN. Considering your arrival time, the earliest possible flight you can catch to from KUL to PEN is on Feb 10 13:55. Don’t worry if you miss this one, there are 6 later flights to PEN on that day.

Say you choose to fly from KUL to PEN on Feb 10 13:55 :
    ETD KUL – Feb 10 13:55
    ETA PEN – Feb 10 14:45

Your will arrive in PEN earliest on Feb 10 14:45.

Your return flight works in similar way.
From PEN to KUL, MH flies 11 times a day.
From KUL to LAX, MH flies 3 times a week – Wed, Sat & Mon.

    Best option:
    ETD PEN – Mar 6 07:40
    ETA KUL – Mar 6 08:30
Followed by a transfer at KUL
    ETD KUL – Mar 6 10:00
ETA LAX – Mar 6 11:50 (same day due to time saved)
Then take a flight from LAX to MCI on any carrier you prefer and head home.
